The Gulf is swimming with life, and a lot of it you can see without trying too hard. Here's a friendly rundown of the animals you're likely to spot and how to enjoy them from a respectful distance.
Bottlenose dolphins are everywhere, riding bow waves, feeding in the passes, sometimes playing just offshore. Early mornings and calm days are the best bet. See them up close on a dolphin cruise with a local operator like Destin Dolphin Cruise, the sunset Sandestin Sunset Eco Dolphin Cruise, or Dolphin Cruise Hannah Marie out of the harbor.
From May through October, sea turtles nest on these beaches. Keep it simple, keep lights off at night and give nests space. Full rundown on our sea turtles page.
Pelicans, terns, gulls and wading birds are constant company. In the shallows you'll see all kinds of fish and, yes, the odd jellyfish. Leave the wildlife alone and everyone has a better day.
