Why is the sand so white?
The sand here comes from the Appalachian Mountains. Rivers carried fine white quartz down to the Gulf over millions of years, and today those grains reflect the sun through the shallow water. That's what gives the coast its emerald color.
📜 A little history
This stretch of coast was a working fishing village long before it became a beach town. Destin earned the nickname "The World's Luckiest Fishing Village" for good reason — the fishing here is still some of the best in Florida.
Through the 20th century the area grew into the "Emerald Coast", a quieter, more relaxed stretch of shore than the coasts further south. Along 30A you'll find the coastal dune lakes, a rare ecosystem found in only a few places on Earth where Gulf and freshwater mix with the tide.
