A shore reef in the state park
Henderson Beach State Park is one of Destin's most loved stretches of sand, a protected mile of white beach with boardwalks and clear water. Just offshore from that shoreline sits an artificial reef with fish, sea turtles and the occasional dolphin passing through. There are directional signs on the beach pointing you the right way to reach it.
Because it sits close to shore, it's one of the easier Gulf reefs to visit without a boat. On a calm, flat day you can swim out, paddle a board out, or drift out on a kayak. It's part of the larger network of more than 275 artificial reef structures Okaloosa County has placed off Destin and Fort Walton.
